Luvy Duvy's Café
07/18/2007
I like quaint little eateries.
Typically, they are the end result of a love affair with food
and a passion to be one's own boss. Such is the case with
Cassady Caldwell and Jackie Seal, partners in the 6-month-old
Luvy Duvy's Café in the Benton Park neighborhood.
The two women have more than 20 years' experience in food
service. They set up shop in a rehabbed building that once was a
neighborhood tavern, then a barbershop and is now a small and
friendly place to grab breakfast or lunch.
I got there too late in the day for breakfast, which ends at 11
a.m., so I ordered a takeout lunch for two.
The soup of the day ($4.50) was a garlic tomato bisque that we
quickly gobbled up. I liked the bits and pieces of crushed
garlic and tomatoes that studded the tasty soup. I'd order it
again.
I long for Cuban sandwiches, so I couldn't pass up Luvy Duvy's
rendition ($6.50). The key to a great Cuban sandwich lies in the
bread, which resembles French bread but is a bit sweeter. The
fillings include roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickles,
and the sandwiches are grilled on both sides. Luvy Duvy's got
the recipe right, but I think it needs at least 3 or 4 ounces of
meat to make it a super sandwich.
We also tried and enjoyed Roxy's famous chicken salad sandwich
($6.50). This is a refreshing salad with grapes, pecans and
celery served on a croissant and accompanied by a couple of
pineapple rings. Both sandwiches came with potato chips.
We tried the baked potato salad ($2) but weren't impressed. I
believe the owners could do better if they'd make the potato
salad rather than buy it from a vendor.
For dessert, we split a big piece of Elsie's spice cake ($2.50),
moist, dark cake brimming with flavor and topped with an
ultrasweet glaze.
Luvy Duvy's Café is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
